John McCabe’s ‘Star Preludes’ demands finger-punishing speed and enormous colouristic imagination from both performers. Like so much of his piano music, it was written for himself to play, with Erich Gruenberg. Both these performances are recorded in the 1734 ‘Habeneck’ Stradivari.
