Sergei Prokofiev – Solo Sonata Op 115 1947

I studied this wonderful piece when I was 14 with the great Ralph Holmes. I played it many times in my teens and since. But last night, I returned to the dog-eared score on which I worked with Ralph, covered with his exhortations and ideas. Immediately, I was transported back to his practice studio, to the wonder of his astonishing playing of this piece, up close, and most of all to his profound understanding of the drama, poise, lyricism and character it demands. It was also the last piece he heard me play, when I was 17, a wonderful memory.
