I met William Bolcom in Stuttgart in 1994, where we performed together. This performance, with the brilliant pianist Junko Kobayashi, was recorded in London four years later. In my opinion, Bolcom’s four sonatas serve as a masterly late twentieth century answer to Charles Ive’s quartet of Violin-Piano Sonatas.
