Arthur Honegger (1892 – 1955) – Largo (from the Solo Sonata 1940)

At the desk performance by Peter Sheppard Skaerved I have loved Honneger’s solo sonata for years, but have not played it as much as should. It was written for Ginette Neveu, and the 1948 edition (published after her tragic death) was edited by her. This is the wonderful short largo, a chorale in all but name, at the heart of the piece. There’s a mis-print -the F sharp that should have been engraved at the start of line three, drifted down to line three -where it makes no sense! This is my marked copy from the mid-nineties. Interesting to return to my fingerings and bowings from then, and to see how and where I have changed my approach.
