Jermey Dale Roberts at work on 'Croquis'. November 2008

Kreutzer Quartet, Aaron Shorr – Jeremy Dale Roberts: Croquis (NMC D151)

Peter and his colleagues in the Kreutzer quartet have worked with Dale Roberts since 2004. Their collaboration was initiated through a shared fascination with the music of Priaulx Rainier, with whom Dale Roberts studied. At this time work began to revive Croquis, which had not been heard since its premiere three decades ago. The title of this work belies its monumental and wide ranging nature; this hour long cycle of works for string trio is perhaps the most ambitious work for string trio since Mozart’s Divertimento  and Beethoven’s Op 3. The detailed work with the composer continued into the recording process: the quartet prefer to use the studio as a place of experimentation and adventure, and this is an ideal environment for the white heat of collaborative exchange.

Here are two snippets from the cycle, ‘Croquis 3’ (No 24) and ‘Étude à Trois’ (No 25). Nothing however, can replace the impact of the whole piece,Go and find it!

PSS gave the premiere of the other major work on this disc, Tristia with Aaron Shorr at Wilton’s Music Hall in 2008. This performance was followed by extensive revisions before the work was recorded in December that year.
