Naji Hakim-Solo Sonata
allegro con spirito
I met Naji Hakim when still an undergraduate student. I was playing a concert of Franck and Tournemire at an organ festival in Huddersfield, and he astounded me with the power and emotional impact of this playing and writing. However, we did not have the chance to collaborate to many years later, when I found that we were both playing in an improvised concert in the the City. I couldn’t resist it, and crept up to the organ loft, and said, ‘Lets do something’. I will never forget the veiled web of line and harmony which he set up-I scarcely dared play, for fear of spoiling something so beautiful. But that was the beginning of a friendship, part of which was learning, playing and recording his brilliant Solo Sonata. A piece which every violinist should play. No question. Enjoy!
