David Matthews’s 5th Quartet returns to the ‘without a break’ form of the 1st and 3rd. After the expansiveness of the 4th Quartet, it is a complete change-this work packs lots of material into very small spaces, and result is explosive, both in lyrcism, and rhythmic intensity. It remains one of the most challenging works in the late 20th century repertoire, and one which we love playing.
